Elections may be held in December, but not after June

The national elections may be held in December this year, said Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government.

This information was revealed in a report published in The Economist on Thursday (May 15).

Dr. Yunus said that the national elections may be held in December this year. But it will not be after June.

He did not confirm whether he will participate in the elections or not.

He said that the interim government has been able to keep inflation and the banking sector stable. However, economic growth is still weak. At the same time, the political situation is also fragile. It has become difficult to bring about major changes even nine months after the revolution.

He said that the consensus commission will formulate the ‘July Charter’ together with the political parties, which will pave the way for holding elections and help in the formation of a “New Bangladesh”.

It is not easy to reach a consensus, there has been a difference of opinion between political parties and the people on which commissions should be there from the beginning. Some say that there should have been a commission on the ready-made garment sector, which is the backbone of the country’s economy; while others complain that the education sector has not been given due importance. The biggest controversy arose around the Women’s Reform Commission, which was formed much later. This commission recommended changes to the Islamic inheritance law, so that women would be given more rights, and this is what led to the protests by Islamist parties.

On the Awami League issue, Dr. Yunus said that the Election Commission suspended the registration of the Awami League on May 12, as a result of which the party will not be able to participate in the elections.
