A statement from the attorney general’s office in the Mexican state of Jalisco said that Valeria was live streaming on TikTok from her beauty salon in the Mexican city of Guadalajara when a man entered the salon and shot her.
“The woman who was killed was active and influential on social media,” the statement said.
The motive for the deadly attack is not yet known. Police are investigating the incident as a “femicide.”
When someone is subjected to violence because they are women, it is considered femicide.
Such gender-based violence is common in Mexico. According to a United Nations report, at least 10 women are killed every day in the country by their partners or family members.
Moments before her death, Valeria was live streaming on TikTok about beauty and lifestyle. In the video, she is seen sitting at a table in a beauty parlor in the suburbs of Zapopan state with a doll in her hand. She was shot while she was live a few seconds later.
The TikTok live did not stop even after her death. Later, another person came and stopped the live with his phone. However, the report did not say whether the person was a police officer.
Local media said that the assailant entered the beauty parlor under the pretext of giving Valeria a gift.
The state prosecutor said that police arrived at the scene at 6:30 pm local time and confirmed Valeria’s death.
However, the prosecutor’s office did not name the suspect.
Valeria has about 200,000 fans on social media TikTok and Instagram.
Her fans are terrified by Valeria’s death on the live stream.
That region of Mexico is considered a haven for criminal activity. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most notorious drug gangs, is active there.
However, investigators have not yet found a link to drug traffickers, said state security coordinator Roberto Alarcón.
Zapopan Mayor Juan José Franzi said Valeria never mentioned any threats to the authorities or asked for help.
“It’s incredible. One moment you’re making a video and the next you’re killed. Femicide is a terrible thing,” Franzi told AFP.
The state attorney general said the shooting was now being investigated by forensic experts.
